The body comprises experts from around the globe and is tasked with the responsibility to promote safe and effective utilisation and production of electrical goods and equipment. It covers topics such as safety, electromagnetic compatibility, efficiency, and quality of the equipment.

It also works with various international and regional standardisation organisations such as ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) and CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardisation) among others. Currently, it has 89 member countries across the globe that work hand in hand to standardise the field and promote a safe and effective way to use this technology for the betterment of mankind.
